While I’m working on my project, I’m reading other books exploring the topic of Images of God. Below are my favorite titles (more to come).
The Divine Feminine: The Biblical Imagery of God as Female (1984) by Virginia Ramey Mollenkott explores both familiar and less familiar images of God. In relatively short chapters, from about five to nine pages, Mollenkott explores sixteen images such as “God as Nursing Mother,” “God as Mother Bear,” and “Bakerwoman God.” Mollenkott offers a blend of scholarship and accessibility that “reflects careful research,” according to National Catholic Reporter. In other words, a background in biblical scholarship is not necessary to appreciate Mollenkott’s findings. For the reader seeking an introduction to biblical feminine imagery, this book is a strong place to start.
